My major at Madison is Economics.
Why? Originally, my plans were to go into Actuarial Sciences and become a mathematician and to work for the rest of my life in a cubicle. Soon I began to realize that this life wasn't the one for me as I need to constantly be talking or being social in some sort of way! I chose to be an economic major after taking both Macro and Microeconomics this past year in high school. I immediately fell in love with the topics and area of study as it incorporated both math and important information for each and every person's life. I figured, \"Hey! Maybe with a major in economics, I can enjoy my math...and still be social\"! And that is the story of how I chose to be an economics major at the University of Wisconsin - Madison!

Favorite place in your home state: What I enjoy attending more than anything else every summer is the Bristol Renaissance Faire in Kenosha! My major at Madison is Communication Arts- Rhetorical Studies and a minor in Religious Studies.
Why? Comm Arts covers multiple fields that I enjoy, such as psychology, sociology, communication, and rhetoric. The major gives a broad overview of these studies, allowing for a great mix of education on human interaction. I love talking to people, knowing their stories, and understanding how and why they communicate and interact with others. The study and practice of Persuasion - a tactic that relies on communication - really interests me. Religious Studies is a great minor to tack on to Comm Arts, because the motivation behind people's actions so often comes from their identities within or outside of the religious community. The roots of so much history come from religion, and I think that understanding that history is important to understanding the lifestyles of others today.

Cera Malueg
Full Name: Cera Malueg
Nickname(s): N/A
Your hometown/high school: New London High School (New London, WI)
Size of your graduating class: 200
Sports/clubs you participated in: I was involved in volleyball and softball throughout my high school career. For two years of high school, I was also a member of the dance team at my school. Math league, National Honors Society, Girl Scouts of America, and the Power of Positive Students are all organizations I participated in while in high school. Music has been a love of mine all my life, and I was very involved throughout my high school career. As a member of Band, Choir, Pep band, Marching band, Jazz II my freshman year and Jazz I for the other three years, I was also preparing for the next performance. My senior year, I included to that list the fall musical for which I played in the band. Outside of my high school, I was involved in other music groups as well. Being a member of the Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra as a violist, I was able to learn more about orchestral playing and challenge myself in my music. For two years I was a member of the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) Honors Band as a tenor saxophone player. Auditioning in my junior year and performing my senior year, I gained the opportunity to be a part of the saxophone section of the WSMA Honors Jazz Band. I am so fortunate to have been so involved in a multitude of diverse activities and am excited to discover the many yet to come as I explore the many opportunities Madison has to offer.
Honors you received in High School or in College: For maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout my high school career I have received Highest Honors, the President's Education Award for Outstanding Excellence, an award for Academic Excellence, and the honor of being valedictorian of my graduating class. By the Post Crescent, I was nominated and chosen as an Academic All-Star from the Fox Valley Region. From both the science and music departments, I was awarded Honor Awards for my participation and dedication. Being involved in athletics and maintaining solid grades, I was awarded a Scholar Athlete Award from the Bay Conference. I received the John Philip Sousa Band Award from my fellow band members. Each honor or award is special to me for its own reasons, but I take pride in my commitment to do my best in everything I do and I have accomplished many things thanks to this dedication.
My major at Madison is Genetics.
Why? During the summers of 2010 and 2011, I was allowed the opportunity to be involved in the Regional Center for Math and Science (RCMS) at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Over the course of six weeks each summer, I was able to work with some of the university's professors in the areas of genetics, molecular biology, immunology and physiology. Being able to also perform lab experiments in each of these areas, I was able to explore the possible careers in the field to a broader extent and gained a passion for genetics and the idea of gene therapy, a field I hope to be involved in in the future.
Some of my favorite things are: playing and listening to music, watching \"The Big Bang Theory,\" and hanging out with friends. I love \"chick flicks\" and reading romance novels when I have the time. My favorite food is ice cream, I can't get enough of it. Summer is my favorite season, it is a time to go swimming, lie on the beach, go water skiing and tubing, and kick back and relax.
Some things I dislike are: Mosquitoes. No matter how many people can be in the area, I'm usually the only one who the mosquitoes attack. When you're in the middle of watching a movie, and it freezes and you can't skip the scene or fast-forward or anything I get so frustrated (especially when it's at the climax of the story line). I'm funny about food preparation. I love eating chicken, but please don't make me touch it before it's cooked. I can, but I prefer not to. On a more serious note however, I dislike seeing people sad or amidst a struggle in their life. I know and understand these events, but will try to do everything I can to cheer them up or help them through a hard situation.
Favorite place in your home state: My favorite place in my home state would have to be the Sweet Memories Candy Shoppe in Lakewood, WI. Ever since I was little, we would head up north to go water skiing and tubing, always trying to sweet talk whoever was driving into stopping at the candy store as we passed through. Inside is just about any candy you can imagine, and though I'm not a big candy eater, I love going there and buying some treats that I just can't seem to find anywhere else. To this day, I am still \"like a kid in a candy store\" when I get to stop in and it is no longer a question as to whether we will stop or not, it has simply become tradition.
My favorite place on campus to hang out is: Still to be determined as it is only my first year on campus

Another group I really enjoy listening to is Celtic Woman for a more relaxing style.

Some things about college that scare(d) me: As a freshman this year, I'm mostly worried about getting lost on the Madison campus. I have very little sense of direction, so I figure I'll have to ask for directions quite a bit.
If I had a night free to do whatever I wanted, I would: Sit on my couch at home curled up in a blanket with one of my dogs sleeping on my feet keeping me extra warm as the movie \"How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days\" played on the TV.
My hero is my high school biology teacher
