Our story

The Wisconsin Singers (first known as University Singers) was founded in 1967 by Arlie Mucks Jr. and Don Neuen to serve as the “Official Ambassadors of Goodwill” for the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Since its founding, Wisconsin Singers has reflected the very best of the UW-Madison campus. Drawing students from a variety of majors with a passion for music and performance, the Singers show took the campus by storm and quickly earned the title of "Official Ambassadors of Goodwill.” Now, more than 55 years later, this nationally-renowned program prides itself on creating spectacular touring productions while growing talents and nurturing future leaders.

Taking the stage in more than 30 communities each year throughout the state and nation, Wisconsin Singers provides a ninety-minute show that features the top singers, dancers, and instrumentalists from our campus performing the best of pop music from the past 50 years. Every Wisconsin Singers show showcases stellar vocals, brilliant choreography, and big band sound. While touring, these talented UW students work with more than 1,000 musicians annually in grades 5-12 in free workshops meant to grow enthusiasm for the arts while providing outstanding collegiate role models.

The program has evolved from a pop music performing ensemble into a professional entertainment company, focused on Broadway-caliber productions, hands-on educational and leadership opportunities, and community service. Working alongside music professionals who arrange, choreograph, and rehearse each season’s brand new show, students handle many of the elements of managing a touring production and gain real-world experience in entertainment management.

Don Neuen, Founding Director

Don Neuen, the founding director of Wisconsin Singers, set the musical bar of excellence exceptionally high for generations of talented UW students.

Arlie Mucks, Jr., the founding producer of Wisconsin Singers, taught us all the value of giving of ourselves as a commitment to the Wisconsin idea.

Wisconsin Singers takes great pride in training UW students in entertainment management and the art of American popular music, while ensuring that our concert sponsors and audiences are always treated to a professional quality music event. This programmatic structure is unique amongst our collegiate peers and truly marks the Wisconsin Singers as the best collegiate performing group in America!

Arlie Mucks. Jr. taught us years ago that it is great to be a Badger, but that with that affiliation comes a responsibility to use our time and talents in the service of others. Over the past 55+ years, Singers has helped music boosters, service organizations, and alumni chapters raise more than a million dollars for their own community initiatives. And, everything we do revolves around our commitment to educate, entertain, and inspire. On Wisconsin!
